Why St. Sulpice?

St. Sulpice was a 7th Century French bishop. Although he was a remarkably holy man who resigned his bishopric to devote himself to the poor, his connection to the Sulpicians is both nominal and symbolic.

Our founder, Fr. Olier, did not want to establish a specific religious congregation, or order, so he named the Society and its first seminary for the parish where he was the pastor, St. Sulpice in Paris.

Not all Sulpicians are identified by the same initials after their names. For example, those in the U.S. go by 'S.S.' while those in France go by 'p.s.s.'
